Marilyn's Funeral (by Ian & Angi)

We were honoured to be among the ten people who were socially distanced in the Crematorium Chapel at Finchley.  As numbers were so limited it seemed to Angi and I that a few words on this website might help those who could otherwise have been there.

Once the simple bamboo coffin and beautiful flowers were put in place, the doors were closed by the undertaker and we were left alone to experience a deeply moving ceremony which was conducted entirely by the family.

Isobel and Olivia spoke of their Mum’s departure and the deep admiration and bond they had with her. They summarised Marilyn’s working life, the numerous interests and the voluntary work that she had enjoyed over the years.

Stephen selected comments taken from the huge number of wonderful tributes they had received from the people who had valued having Marilyn in their lives. He added his own moving tribute.

None of us there were surprised by the depth of the positive and loving feelings that were expressed, but when heard all at once it reminded us of just how much Marilyn had packed in to her life.  It may have been shorter than it should have been, but she used her time so very well.

Thoughtful music and a poem selected and read by Olivia were chosen for the ceremony. The final song, “Thank you for the days” by the Kinks seemed to say everything we were feeling.

Obviously, the whole event and the comments from Stephen, Olivia and Isobel were extremely moving for everyone present.  They were well delivered, despite the obvious challenges, and what was said was a fitting tribute to Marilyn’s life, but if she could have witnessed the way they conducted the proceedings she would have been very proud of the family she has left behind. Therefore, the ceremony was also a tribute to each of them individually and as a family. We are sure that it will help them to carry on without the presence of the person who played such a large part of building the team.
